Entries for December 2004

December 1, 2004 at 2:26AM I’m 25 today.

Happy Birthday to me!

December 8, 2004 at 10:28PM KWiki becomes FusionWiki

I’m changing the name of my ColdFusion-based wiki engine to FusionWiki. Why? I want to put it up on SourceForge, and KWiki was already taken. And it’s a cool name. [wink]

I applied to have the project created just today, so it might take a while before they get back to me on whether or not they’re willing to host the CVS repository. But I’m optimistic, and have installed TortoiseCVS on my machine here at work so I can work on it when I’ve time.

And on the topic of this site, you might notice that while the listing order of entries on the front page is still date-descending, it’s now date-ascending in the archives. I thought that might feel a bit more natural.

Yay! A few links:

December 13, 2004 at 12:28PM Area 51 Opens

I’ve been keeping quiet about this for ages, but now I can talk about it.

Some of my friends are after opening a gaming café here in Cork. The quality of the existing ones isn’t that great and, seeing as we all go gaming pretty often, they decided to go and open up their own one.

And so arrived Area 51, which, though I’m admittedly biased, is the best gaming café in the city. It’s packed full of Alienware machines, with all the best games, and it looks like a veritable gamer’s wet dream. [smile]

I spent my weekend helping Peter and Sam deck the place out and set up the machines. Two days of work with no sleep! It was exhausting, but well worth it.

If you’re in Cork, give it a try: it’s well worth it.

P.S. I have vouchers for free time, if anybody wants some. Mick, I’m talking to you, man!

December 13, 2004 at 9:21PM Must reenable page editing!

I’m in Area 51 right now, and I needed to hack part of the site. But then I remembered that I haven’t re-enabled bloody page editing on the site! D’oh!

December 15, 2004 at 11:39PM Spammers are scum

Bastards, the lot of them. I don’t care what kind of excuses some might make, it’s just scummy. Spam is the online equivalent of spray-painting somebody else’s property.

I’m after spending two hours cleaning the gunk from my two wikis, so fuck the lot of ye!

December 21, 2004 at 9:26PM My ring tone: Lament

I wrote this ages ago, but I want to post it somewhere so I won’t lose it if my phone dies or something. And vanity, of course. [wink]

Note: I ought to change the note lengths ‘cause this really should use a lower beat rate.

It’s an abbreviated version of the whole tune, which is why there’s that slightly dodgy transition--which, I’m thankful, nobody notices--in the middle.

December 25, 2004 at 10:52PM For Christmas, I got an iPod and a Gameboy Advance!

Neat, huh? Gotta love needless consumption. [smile]

But seriously, I do appreciate the gifts, it’s just that I would have never got them myself!

December 29, 2004 at 9:40PM FusionWiki’s first commit

I threw up the current codebase for FusionWiki up into the CVS repository. I haven’t made any changes to the code as yet aside from modifying the licence to the Common Public License.

Peek away, but be warned: the code’s still all just a quick hack.

December 30, 2004 at 1:26AM Worried about two friends and the tsunami

Right now I’m worried. I haven’t posted up anything since it happened because I didn’t know what to write, but I’m worried about Thérèse and Vinnie, two friends of mine who are travelling through SE Asia right now.

I haven’t heard word from them in ages, but then again I haven’t been able to check my eircom.net email address. So what I’m basically asking is that if either of ye read this and want to assure me that ye’re ok, leave a comment here.

Meanwhile the rest of ye should at least try and do something small by contributing to one of the Irish Red Cross, Concern, Trócaire, UNICEF, or to the American Red Cross (Thanks, Bernie).

Update: I’m after downloading all 550 or so emails since the 23rd, and not a thing from them. [sad]

Update Two: All is well! Thérèse is after sending everybody a “Happy New Year” email. Phew! Stupid me!
